NEGRO STUDENTS WALK OUT OF ASSEMBLY AT WASHINGTON HIGH SCHOOL

Last Wednesday, Nov. 10, at an Armistice Day observance program at Washington High School, Negro students walked out of the assembly when the Boys' Choral Group sang "Cornfield Melody" the words to which are: "Some folks say that a nigger won't steal." The students not only walked out in resentment but called the Urban League. In the Washington High School bulletin on Friday appeared the following statement:

"To ALL Teachers: You are requested to read the following statement to students along with other notices to be brought to their attention. On the program presented in recognition of Armistice Day last Wednesday a reflection was presented by a choral group in which words were used that were considered offensive to our Negro boys and girls. There was no malicious thought planned, implied or intended by anyone in using this selection. Racial relationships have been most harmonious and cooperative over a long period of years at our school. This school sincerely regrets that this happened and all are asked to continue our present cooperation in the interest of future harmony."
