As the No. 3 passenger train on the Toledo, Wabash and Western railroad was running a curve between Chatton and Bowen yesterday, the engineer discovered a child about two or three years of age on the track a short distance ahead. He immediately reversed the engine and called the attention of the fireman to it. The latter, whose name is Geo. Wedgewood, seeing at once that the train could not be stopped in time to save its life, crept out on the cow-catcher, braced himself, and when he got within reach of the child he seized it and threw it up in the air, so that it lit upon its shoulder, thus snatching it from the very jaws of death. It was a brave and heroic act, and done at the peril of his own life, and one for which he is entitled to the largest measure of praise and commendation. He was slightly injured in the undertaking, but not to any extent. The child was entirely unhurt.-Keokuk Gazette.
