If that story Catts told of his
agreement with "Uncle Joe" Cannon
had been true, it would have been a
shameful one for a democrat to tell.
and that it is untrue is another rea-
son for distrusting Catts' sanity as
well as his veracity. A special from
Washington to the Tampa Tribune
says:
Uncle Joe Cannon, the veteran Illi-
nois congressman today emphatically
knocked into a cocked hat the allega-
tions of Gov. S. J. Catts of Florida,
made a short time ago at St. Augus-
tine, that he and Mr. Cannon had en-
tered into a "reciprocal agreement
regarding national legislation, should
the former be elected to the Senate of
the United States."
In his speech Governor Catts re-
ferred to Mr. Cannon as being one of
the most influential republicans in
Congress and emphasized the state-
ment that the alleged agreement en-
tered into between them for the
handling of congressional business
had already received the sanction of
"Uncle Joe."
Asked today regarding the matter.
Mr. Cannon said:
"I have no recollection of ever
meeting Mr. Catts, the governor of
Florida. But the alleged 'reciprocal
agreement' which he said he has with
me is so absurd as to be a stale joke.
I have no understanding with any
real or prospective senator with re-
gard to any reciprocal agreement."
Washingtonians today were dis-
cussing the governor's statements
with interest, when it became known
that the whole thing was either a
dream or a joke on the part of Gov-
ernor Catts. They also were discuss-
ing Governor Catts' statement that
he had been offered $50,000 in cash
while making his campaign for gov.
ernor in 1918, to make speeches for
Charles E. Hughes, then republican
candidate for president, with the fur-
ther offer that if Catts was defeated
and Hughes elected Catts could have
any cabinet position except that of
secretary of war.
