AND THEIR DUPES
The Van Buren leaders of this city have much to answer for, in regard to the false news of success which they despatched to the South on Friday. In Washington the office-holders were thrown into a delirium of joy, and fell into the most extravagant antics. Mr. Van Buren himself was heard to declare "that he was now certain of success, for I now know," he added, "that New York is Mine!" He awoke from his reverie, probably, at half past 11 o'clock yesterday morning.
The above is from the N. York Com'l Advertiser; and we assure our cotemporary that some of our townsmen of the Van Buren party have so lively a sense of their obligations for the false intelligence of success which was sent here, that they heartily wish the manufacturers of it at Jericho! Some poor credulous fellows went about the city taking bets wherever they could find them, and staking all they possessed in the world. There was no limit to their noisy and obtrusive swaggering and boasting, nor to their insolent jeering of the Opposition. "Old Tip's no go!" "Down with your Log Cabin!" "What will you take for your flag staff? we'll need it to run up flags for the Van Buren States?" "How do you sell coon skins?" &c. &c. &c., were the taunting exclamations on every side. Some of the weaker brethren indulged in the most ridiculous display of vanity. On the strength of Mr. Van Buren's certain re-election, their establishments were to be enlarged, and their equipage adorned and beautified. One was to get a new carriage! another to take a larger house. &c. &c. Then spoke out, too, the genuine spirit of the grasping and proscriptive spoilsmen. Menaces of punishment swift and sure were uttered against those in office who had wavered however slightly in their adherence to the Administration; and "war to the knife" was proclaimed against all who had countenanced any of the Log Cabin meetings or doings.
But oh! what a revolution the mail of Sunday wrought! All the pleasing visions of the Loco Focos vanished, and the tribulation which followed was as manifest in their aspects and deportment, as their delirium of joy had been short-lived, vain and illusory.
