The Buenos Ayres Argos of the 11th Sept. contains official accounts of the surprise and capture, on the 5th August of General Carratala, with 600 men, at Chacapa. by Colonel Valdez, alias, the Barbarucho. Carratala was on his way to take possession of Potosi; very few of his division escaped. Colonel Valdez was pursued by the Spanish General Valdez with his division, and gave battle at Escara. The force of the General was completely routed, and he was compelled to retreat in turn, with about 600 followed by the Colonel in the direction of Tolapampa. These engagements were between Royalist partisans attached respectively to General Olaneta and his rival, who were contending for dominion. Olaneta is said to have been at San Juan on the 27th Aug. with about 8000 men.
