Lillian Evanti Triumphs on Big Tour

Again on international Lillian Evanti has returned East. Her itinerary during 1935 included Washington, New York, Louisiana, Texas, California, Nebraska, Illinois, and Michigan. Earlier tours in the season included Ohio, Tennessee, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Kentucky.

What an artistic triumph—personally and for the race. Critics vied with each other in using superlatives. For when a celebrated critic such as Edward Moore on the Chicago Tribune, says: "Here is a remarkable artist, regardless of race, nationality or residence. She is one of those rare singers sent into the world to demonstrate that the art of singing is a fine art, a potent stimulating art capable of creating memories of the past and hopes for the future." We know what a tribute it is for few singers, American or Foreign, have enjoyed such distinction. He says further, "What she has done with the music of white composers entitles her to stand with the best of the white interpretive singers. With negro music she could project the feelings, aspirations, hopes of a whole race."

Herman Devries in the Chicago American hails Evanti as a new star. He calls her a "perfect coloratura soprano, lacking nothing and possessing everything." He enumerates a few of her vocal qualities purity, charm, scintillating warmth, etc.

Not since Galli-Curci (said Glenn Dillard Gunn with the Chicago Examiner) made her first success under Campanini have I heard a coloratura voice so round and full in timbre, so warm in color and so powerful. A flawless thrill.

Throughout Texas and Louisiana, in fact everywhere Evanti appeared, her audiences were spellbound proud of her achievement and amazed that the race had produced such a finished artist as a critic said: "lacking nothing and possessing everything."

She tells me that she has kept very well in spite of constantly changing climates. She says "that is my biggest job once I have mastered my program." We can't do anything efficiently without good health.

Evanti will concertize in America next season and has already important engagements booked, carrying her again to the Pacific Coast where she won unprecedented laurels.
