Self Defense Given As Cause, Police Say Man Says
PIERCE VICTIM
An early trial in the nearly four-year-old murder of Joseph L. Pierce, a railway mail clerk and resident of the West Side at the time of his death, will be urged, it was learned from Fulton County police officials Monday night.
Marcus Malcom, arrested Friday by County Officers E. W. Wilson and H. B. Carroll and booked on 'suspicion of murder,' confessed to the fatal stabbing of Pierce late Saturday night at Fulton Tower, the officers declared.
The victim was stabbed February 12, 1933, at the corner of Central and Ashby streets. He died the following day.
Fulton County grand jury returned an indictment against Malcom, February 17, 1933, charging him with the murder of the railway clerk.
Malcom left Atlanta immediately following the death of Pierce and

lived in Chicago two years before returning here, County Officer E. W. Wilson said.
"We attempted to arrest him several times after we had been notified of his return to Atlanta but he always managed to dodge us," Officer Wilson told the World.
Police reports showed that Malcom was arrested Friday at a "skin game." A youth whose name was listed as Robert Owens of an Ashby Circle address, was said by the arresting officers to have identified Malcom.
The prisoner, it is alleged, claimed he stabbed Pierce in self-defense.
Records show that the victim was stabbed in the chest after he reprimanded Malcom for winning a sum of money from a West Side youth by means of trickery.
Officer Wilson, Monday night, said he had heard that two of the witnesses to the stabbing are deceased.
1 dead man was the husband of Mrs. Geraldine Pierce of 352 Cairo street, NW. He was the father of two boys.
