Candidate for Governor.
A correspondent of the Columbus Democrat suggested, some weeks ago, the name of James Whitfield, Esq., of Lowndes, as a suitable democratic candidate for Governor at the next election. Mr. W., it will be remembered, is now Speaker of the House of Representatives, and is a most excellent, estimable citizen. We know but little of his qualifications for the station—for carrying on an active canvass—or of his opinions on questions of State policy. We agree with the writer in the Democrat that it is time a suitable candidate should be sought for, the pretensions of those whose names may be placed before the Convention discussed, and their qualifications understood.
One word as to the portion of the State from which a selection should be made. All the occupants of the Executive chair since the organization of the State government, with one single exception, have been from the Southern or Southwestern counties. In view of this fact, every consideration of justice requires that the selection should now be made from the Northern or Eastern counties.
In addition to the gentleman alluded to above, we have heard the names of several other good democrats mentioned in private circles in connection with the station. Whoever is selected should, and will, receive the cordial support of the whole democracy. Without expressing a preference for any particular individual, we shall have accomplished our object if we succeed in drawing a share of public attention to the matter.
