FARMS INCREASE IN
NUMBER IN GADSDEN

There was an increase of 198 farms in Gadsden county, Florida, between 1930 and 1935, according to a preliminary tabulation of returns of the Census of Agriculture which began January 2, 1935, released today by Director William L. Austin, Bureau of the Census, Department of Commerce.

There were reported 1,570 farms in 1935 as compared with 1,372 in 1930. The average size of the farms was 109.7 acres in 1935 and 114.3 acres in 1930. The average value of land and buildings per farm was $1,980 in 1935 and $3,637 in 1930.

The number of cattle on farms on January 1, 1935 was 9,681 as compared with 5,143 on April 1, 1930. There were 339 horses and colts, 1,874 mules and mule colts, and 15,269 hogs and pigs reported on January 1, 1935.

Land from which crops were harvested was 52,896 acres in 1934 as compared with 49,724 acres in 1929. The acreage and production of selected crops harvested in 1934 were: Corn for grain, 35,280 acres and 503,804 bushels; all hay and sorghums for forage, 3,045 acres and 2,496 tons; sweetpotatoes, 1,918 acres and 153,385 bushels; and tobacco, 1533 acres and 1,392,053 pounds.

These figures for 1935 are for selected items only and are subject to correction. Final figures by counties are to be presented in a State bulletin for Florida.
