SHORTAGE OF THE WORKHOUSES PROBED
Columbus, Oct. 20.-The Ohio legislature winter will be asked to enact legislation designed to solve the workhouse problem.
There is a dearth of workhouses in Ohio, due to prohibition. As a result, county jails appear to be about the only place where prisoners convicted of misdemeanors can be sent.
Among objections to this plan is that of the nonemployment of the prisoners. At a conference here of safety directors and superintendents of workhouses from different cities the plan of urging legislation, which would divide the state into districts, with one or more workhouses available for all towns and cities in each district, was discussed. The conference selected a committee to study the way by which other states are meeting this problem. The committee, also, was authorized to suggest proposed legislation desired at the hands of the Ohio legislature.
