Free Soil Movements.

We can hardly be expected to keep up with the movements of the free soilers, in their attempt to extricate themselves from their present uncomfortable position, but we can state the fact that they are circulating their petitions for "a union" among the democrats of this and adjoining counties, but without any sort of encouragement. Their State Committee made a sad mistake when they declared that they sought and advised a union with those only, who wished to make the Wilmot Proviso a party test and a part of the democratic creed.

The Argus sums the whole thing up in a very few words and hits the mark exactly when after supposing them to succeed and to proclaim their Proviso test, as of course they would. it says "no one can imagine that the democrats will accept such a "union."

If the free soil leaders fail in this design, they will scarcely acquiesce in its proceedings.— In either event. it will fail to effect the assumed object, union. And the idea that it might result in a cordial support of a State ticket. upon a just and liberal basis, and such as all democrats can stand upon, (which the free soil leaders repudiate,) is the only justification that any democrat can offer for giving countenance to a course so clearly in conflict with the organization of the Democratic Party.
