Under this significant caption the Columbia Herald of the 22d inst., gives one of Pulaski's old itinerant carpet-baggers a slight airing. The Herald gives the following particulars and comments:
"Last Monday Captains J. M. and A. C. Hickey, attorneys at law and claim agents at this place, having been arrested by a United States officer, went down to Nashville, to have their trial before the United States Commissioner. They appeared before Commissioner Gray, but no trial or bail was at first allowed them. The Messrs. Hickey soon saw that the whole thing was a trick of the ring, and threatened to apply for a writ of habeas corpus, if a trial or bail was not allowed. Cloon, upon whose affidavit they had been arrested, was nowhere to be found, as his only object was to prevent Hickey from appearing at Pulaski, where he was to receive $1,000, and which his non-attendance would give to Cloon. Cloon is as dirty a dog as ever crossed the Ohio. The threat had the desired effect and the Messrs. Hickey were released."
