Defeat of Mayor Wood.--The municipal election in New York city resulted in the defeat of Mayor Wood and the election of Mr. Tiemann by more than two thousand majority. The result is most gratifying and the lesson an instructive one. The moral is, says the Baltimore American, that the intelligent, honest, and conservative portion of the people have the power, if they will, to control political events in the face of the most corrupt combinations, the most unscrupulous use of force and fraud, and even a numerical preponderance in the rank and file of the opposing party. Why is it that they will never use this power but on extraordinary occasions?
