Full Text
The Presidential Election.
The Election of Electors of President and Vice President of the United States, which is soon to take place, comes on with so gentle an aspect, and with a step so light, that its approach is scarcely noticed. The warring elements of party are at rest. A perfect stillness pervades the political atmosphere; and, for once, the calm is not deceitful.
It is a circumstance, certainly, which ought to give much satisfaction, that a period has arrived, for the second time under this government, when an individual has so administered the duties of the Office of President for one term, and possesses so entirely the confidence of the whole nation, as that no opposition is even thought of to his re-election. It is an incident auspicious to the duration of our system of government: favorable to the stability and consistency of our domestic policy: honorable to the character of the Republic.
