Extract of a letter from New York, December 19.

"It is impossible to describe our feelings or dreadful situation at present, in this place, on occasion of the late shocking news from England. Who could have imagined, that the Councils of a great and magnanimous nation, such as Britain once was, would have deliberately consented to make the most disgraceful and inhuman sacrifice of her numerous and loyal adherents in this country; -- those especially, who have willingly and actively stepped forth to preserve her, and in so doing, have devoted themselves, families and fortunes, on the issue. Yet, after all this, to turn us over to Congress, our most insulting and inveterate enemies, whose tender mercies are cruelty, without any stipulation in our favour, is a stain not to be wiped off but by the exemplary punishment of those who advised the barbarous measure.

We know our Sovereign is good and gracious, and that his heart never acquiesced in so ignominious a concession. We yet love and revere him; had those about him been as true to the interest and credit of the nation as himself, no such dishonor had happened, but America might have been again reunited to Britain, as one great and essential pillar of her empire.

"Ah! why, why is all this given up to America, at a time when she is at her lowest ebb, weak, almost beyond contempt, in power, in cash, in her army, disunited, and distressed in every respect, as a nation? -- Why will you force, as it were, independence on a people, the great majority of whom are, in fact, against it -- who regard it as a curse, and not a boon?

The ruling party, though governing, because the arms are in their hands, speak not the voice of the people at large; these are truly with you -- Ah! why then desert them, when it is manifestly in your power to aid and relieve them to your own advantage?"
