The canvass waxes hot in Jessamine, where Major Will Brown of this city has gone to advocate the claim of Radical candidate. At Pekin on Saturday, he jumped afoul of the old war-horse, Captain Cogar, and from what they say, he came off second best. He twitted the Captain about Democratic extravagance and in reply the Captain confessed that he had voted appropriations for all the public charities and that if he was re-elected he would give especial attention to the Institute for the Feeble Minded as he wanted it kept up for the benefit of his assailant Brown, where his morals might be so improved as to make him ashamed to go around the county telling lies on him. The old Captain was thoroughly aroused, and said that he had been so worried by Brown that he was compelled to use plain English. Major Brown is a forcible speaker and the Captain says "a smart fellow, but is prodigiously given to exaggeration." The contest between the young Radical and the old Democrat, is affording the people a good deal of amusement. Captain Cogar says he tries his best to keep his temper, but that Will Brown would provoke the devil himself to swear a little.
