Event Details
Tobiansky, the Belgian engineer, developed a process where smoke is forced by a fan into a filtering tower charged with coke or other porous absorbent, sprinkled with naphtha or alcohol. Soot is retained by the coke, while filtered gases mixed with vapor are collected as pyrogas, which burns with a bright flame without smoke. It is profitable to burn low-grade fuel for smoke alone, and small-cost plants can convert city garbage into purified smoke for light and power. Large factories and small establishments in Belgium are experimenting in saving and producing smoke for combustible gas.
