LOCOFOCO STATE CONVENTIONS.
MARRIAGE EXTRAORDINARY.
The State Convention of the two branches of the Locofoco party of Vermont, was holden at Montpelier on Thursday last-and a brief notice of the proceedings will be found in another column. As a friend of peace we are happy to announce that the factious spirit which has for a short time existed in the Locofoco ranks, has been subdued-that oil has been poured upon the troubled water-and that harmony and union once more prevail in the camp of all there is of Locofocodom in Vermont. It is not to be supposed that we-outside barbarian as we are-should know anything of the means and appliances brought to bear upon the refractory to bring them into the traces-nor is it for us to say which branch of the party has swallowed the other. Out of the line but little can be known of the compact that has been entered into between the parties interested, and which, as it would seem is to bind 'harmonious souls' once more together. Whether our new born democratic free soil friends have taken a well endorsed bond from their Hunker allies that they shall play fair, or whether they have agreed to play false themselves, is of course a matter known only to the wire pullers of the party; but be this as it may, we think it behoves all honest free soilers and especially all whigs to look cautiously at the big (not white) heap, set up for their inspection and consideration.
Of the personal or private character of Horatio Needham or of Daniel Roberts Jr we have nothing to say; with the latter gentleman we have been on terms of intimacy from early boyhood, they are both 'honorable men,' and but for their alliance with, and long continued adhesion to a party ever opposed to the principles which they now profess to regard as so important, we should think they had almost as strong a claim for the suffrage of the real free soilers of Vermont as have had Carlos Coolidge, Robert Pierpoint and the several Governors and Lieutenant Governors of the State for the past six years.
We know not how far this strange union of the democratic (pretended) free soilers, with the pro slavery Locofocodom of Vermont, will be binding on the stand and faithful abolitionists of Vermont; but, as coming events cast their shadows before, so in the present instance does the mirror of the past give us bright hopes of the future. It remains to be seen whether the intelligent whigs of Vermont are to be sold as Sheep are sold in the shambles.
SWALLOWING EXTRAORDINARY.
Every body is asking in relation to the Montpelier Convention which branch of the locofoco party has swallowed the other?- This we think is a difficult question to answer-and yet it brings to mind a reminiscence of youth the detail of which may be deemed at least by some, as satisfactory-- In our boyhood we were in the habit of attending occasionally the performances of a celebrated juggler, then the Herr Alexander of Cincinnati, and the whole West, and who invariably in announcing his next performance, stated that the evening's entertainment would conclude by his Swallowing himself! Of course such an announcement excited the curiosity of the juveniles, who had seen him do every thing else, and thought it possible that he might do even that, and consequently the entrances were freely rendered on each night of the performance. After waiting for a long time for the execution of this tremendous feat, many began to get impatient,-when a youth tore forward from the rear and who had attended most patronizing, respectfully asked the performer when he was going to gratify the audience with the performance of the feat so often announced! 'Bless your innocent heart,' says the performer, 'you're seen me do that a hundred times'-but if it will particularly please you, as I leave for Britain in the morning, I will go through with it a-
gain. In the meantime raising a glass of water to his mouth and taking a few swal-
lows, he says, 'did I not swallow myself?-
If I did not, who swallowed for me?'
Any one can make their own application of the above to the swallowing process enacted at Montpelier last week.
