At Martinsburg, Virginia on the 21st ult. a duel was fought between Messrs. Elliot and Swan.
The duel said to have originated in Mr. Elliot's saying in consequence of his having paraded out of uniform.
At this aroused umbrage and gave a challenge, accepted by Mr. Elliot.
On receiving the word, Mr. Elliot fired, and his ball entered the thigh of his antagonist, who fell to the ground, on observing which, he walked up and enquired of Mr. Swan if he was badly hurt, who, without giving an answer ordered him back to his post, and said, that he must also have his fire. -He went back. Mr. Swan being unable to stand discharged his pistol in a sitting posture- his ball penetrated the right breast of Mr. Elliot, and, it is supposed, lodged in the left shoulder.
The life of Mr. Elliot was for some time despaired of, but is now said they are both on the recovery.
-Both the gentlemen behaved like "two rams."
