The Recreation Officer for the 3rd Corps Area has solved the problem of Hostesses for the C. M. T. C. Camps, Third Corps Area, in spite of the fact that the appropriations for this year forget this item.
At Fort Eustis there is Miss Marsh Weio is a Hostess for the Regular Troops stationed there and she has made arrangements to take care of the C. M. T. C. Candidates there with help of volunteers from nearby cities.
At Camp Meade The situation at Camp Meade offered difficulty until it was remembered that Miss Bernstein now one of the assistants to the C. M. T. C. Officer was a trained hostess with war training and previous C. M. T. C. and that she would be one of the force sent to Meade during the summer. This will enable her in addition to her other duties to take charge of this work at Camp Meade. Miss Bernstein in an interview recently said:
"The duties of the Hostess are numerous-we have to see to the needs of the entire command, including officers, enlisted men, and civilians assigned on temporary or permanent duty in camps; to act in capacity of official chaperone during entertainments held in club houses; to recommend the proper system of securing women guests for such entertainments; to make necessary recommendations for insuring proper and adequate housing for women living in Camp and for Visitors; to organize committees for dances; arrange dance schedules; provide music, etc.; to develop cordial relations between the Military Establishment and the Civilian community."
The War Department in providing and outlining various means for Recreation for students and soldiers, provides for the establishment of Service Clubs.
In Posts, Camps or Stations having hostesses furnished by the War Department (or Corps Area Hqrs.) the Clubs are directly under the supervision of the Camp Hostess and are operated by her and such assistants as higher authority may provide C. M. T. C. Greatest of All Clubs.
Miss Bernstein is, of course, a C. M. T. C. Booster. she said "Having been in the Army as a War Department Hostess, and Welfare Worker since 1917, I feel free to admit that I have had sufficient opportunity to observe the remarkable development in thousands of young men students with whom I have come in contact during the C. M. T. Camps it has been my pleasure to have participated in as a Hostess.
"When one considers the extent of a Hostess' duties and how she guards the leisure hours of all the youngsters attending the Camps, how constantly she has them before her careful scrutiny, how keenly she feels every change in them, it is not surprising when I boldly assert myself and say to each and every father and mother who has a son within the age limits required for this vacation, to have him send in his application without delay, and join the greatest of all Clubs, provided for the youth of our nation by Uncle Sam, without cost to the student. Tell the Boys not to delay! See their County Chairman, Dr. L. M. Allen, Winchester, or write to the C. M. T. C. Officer, Hqrs. 3rd Corps Area, Baltimore Md."
The Corps Area Recreation Officer is expecting to obtain the services of several volunteer hostesses for Camp Meade to aid in this work, and the feminine influence and touch which was found so important in past camps is thus assured for 1926.
