J. Q. Adams. This veteran demagogue, and ex-apostate from blue-light federalism, we perceive, has recently received much attention in his travels through a part of New York, and some other States. We were particularly struck with the fawning and flattering which took place between him and Mr. Fillmore, (of Buffalo) Chairman of the Committee of Ways and Means, in the last Congress. It seems Mr. F. sustained Mr. A., in his ridiculous nonsense about the right of petition,—for which the latter glorifies the former exceedingly.
It is really astonishing that the Northern States should be, (with all their vain glorious boasting of superiority of intelligence over the South and West,) the nursery of all the humbugs of the Union. Let us enumerate a few of the late ones: their abolitionism—their Joe Smith and Miller religious notions—their Grahamism—their deification of Dickens, (the author of the life of "the one ear New York hog")—and now, as if they had not gone far enough in the career of human absurdity, they have been lately glorifying J. Q. Adams, and his servile notions of what he is pleased to term the right of petition.
Can it be possible that these northern States desire to consume one half of the time of Congress in presenting abolition petitions, when that body has again and again declared it has no jurisdiction over the question? Cannot Congress, as all civil tribunals do, put an end to the introduction of matters over which it has no control?
The expense of congress is estimated at $3000 per day: it is high time for the people, therefore, to calculate the benefit they derive, to gratify an old dotard, in a stupid ridiculous whim. We wish some one who is informed on the matter, would make a calculation what old John Q. Adams and his abolition petitions, have cost the nation.
