JUNEAU (AP) Secretary of Interior Stewart Udall was urged by Gov. Wm. Egan today to reconsider the appointment of Robert Bennett as Area Director of the Bureau of Indian Affairs at Juneau.
In a wire to Udall, Egan said a qualified Alaskan should be appointed to the post, being vacated by James Hawkins.
Egan's wire said:
"Strongly protest and urge your reconsideration of appointment of Robert Bennett as Alaska Area Director. Bureau of Indian Affairs. Report to you of your task force on Indian Affairs cites distinct nature of Alaska area problems. Bennett's qualifications unknown to me but respectfully suggest it should be obvious that his lack of knowledge of Alaska scene will delay for considerable period realization of effective program so badly needed by Alaska's natives.
Appointment of non-Alaskan carries connotation that Alaska continues to suffer from absentee government inflicted upon it during territorial days and strongly repugnant to all Alaskans. Urge most strongly you reconsider Bennett appointment in favor of qualified Alaskan."
