TAFT PRAISES MISSIONARIES.

NEW YORK, December 14.—President Taft was yesterday one of the speakers before the convention that marks the diamond jubilee of the Methodist Episcopal church at present in session here. In the course of his address he commended highly the work of the missionaries of the combined faiths and referred to them as the forerunners of civilization.

After leaving the convention he made his way through a drenching rain to one of the Bowery missions on the East Side. While here he addressed an audience composed of typical Bowery characters. The hall was crowded with the men of the neighborhood who wanted to see the chief executive.
