Politicians responsible for the vicious anti-labor legislation now before Congress and the state legislatures must be answered in the only language they can understand—fear of not being re-elected—declared Jack Kroll, PAC director, at a recent CIO political action conference in Washington.
"They are very sensitive to what is happening back home," the PAC director asserted. "They want to know what the voters are saying, what they are thinking about and, above all, they want to know are they organizing. Are they organizing in the wards, in the neighborhoods, are they organizing for registration, are they organizing to get voters to the ballot boxes on Election Day?
"That is what these politicians will look at, and it is better than all the arguments we can give them under the present circumstances."
Kroll told the conference that political action must be emphasized in 1947 if success was to be attained in 1948. "It is not too early now," he said. "The Republican Committee is busy. The Democratic Committee is busy. Bob Taft has his machine. Joe Ball has his machine working today—he has already set up his campaign committee in Minnesota.
"We are going to place the emphasis back home in the wards."
The PAC director's speech was hailed by the conferees, who indicated their determination to go back into their respective communities and work harder than ever to build the PAC.
