FOUGHT FOR $18,000.-The heroic fight made by Farmer Rummel and his housekeeper against two powerful robbers was to save a bag containing $18,000 in gold. The robbers however, did not know that the stake was so big, or the farmer and the brave woman might not be living to tell the story of the combat. Rummel lives at Carsonville, Pa. and has hoarded his cash in his house rather than put it in the banks. On Wednesday night the thieves called the farmer from the house. and demanded his money. The housekeeper heard the talking and also came out. Rummel refused to tell where the precious bag of gold was kept. and he was knocked down. Two bullets were fired at the woman. and the robbers, fearing that they had murdered their victims. fled. However neither was much hurt. Farmer Rummel drove. to Millersburg and astonishing the bank teller when he shoved a bag of gold toward the window, saying: "There is $18,000. I want to put it in the bank." The gold was counted and figures were found to be correct. Hereafter the farmer will be a firm believer in the security of banks.
