Snow geese, some 2,000 in all, made their first stop in Montana this week at Alkali lake, just south of Cut Bank, on their way south for the winter. The geese are forerunners of hundreds of thousands of waterfowl, including the Canada goose, whistling swans and other migratory birds, which rest at sites in Montana enroute to their winter headquarters in southern states.
Montana is a focal point for migratory waterfowl in that birds from three flyways pass through the state on their way to the wintering grounds in the south.
Canada geese, or honkers, predominate in Montana's wild goose population.
