Full Text
After a number of days and many ballotings, the Louisiana Legislature on last Tuesday night elected Judge E. D. White, of New Orleans, as junior U. S. Senator, over the present brilliant, courageous and talented Senator, E. B. Eustis. Before the last ballot was taken Ex-senator Jonas withdrew his name.
We learn from Holy Writ that man is fearfully and wonderfully made, but not half so strange in his make-up as Louisiana politicians. It looks to us that if the Louisiana Democracy had any sense of gratitude, they would not have displaced Eustis, a man so well known for his great usefulness and his political knowledge, for one who has no national reputation. But then there might have been a barrel behind the scenes, after all.
