SHRUB ON SHOOR
BY MRS. C. I. BAKER.
[In the city of Morocco there is an antique fountain decorated with Moorish arch, and carved in the old arabesque work; it is called Shrub on Shoor (Behold and Drink), and is inscribed with the architect's name, Mamun, with the pious addition, "God be praised that I was able to finish this work."]
Behold and drink! From heart of hills afar
I come, through cool, dark conduits that vein
Their way beneath the fertile palm-girt plain
And source of waters crystalline unbar.
The cup of Moor or Algerine, I fill:
Nor seek to know his nation or his creed,
Jew, pilgrim, prince or beggar, who hath need
Find equal favor here: Drink ye who will.
The motley group that come at eventide
Recount the day's events in converse brief,
And, like to outlines dim in bas-relief,
Seem pictured shadows by the fountain side.
And when the moon illumes the scene with light,
Is heard the melody of lute and song:
Anon, the voices cease! The flitting throng
Hath homeward vanished through the orient night.
—November Cottage Hearth.
