Atlanta's New YWCA Viewed As Thing Of Charm Beauty
By ALICE H. WASHINGTON
To walk through the spacious new building, home of the Phyllis Wheatley Branch YWCA, located at 599 Tatnall Street, S. W., is like reaching the end of the rainbow, and finding a pot of gold. Literally speaking, that is what those of us who have waited, watched and prayed for the new "Y" building find.
The completely modern edifice constructed and equipped at an estimated cost of $147,000 incorporates the latest in streamlined efficiency and beauty, to certain office space for staff members and the executive director, dormitory space, club room, conference room, well-appointed lounge, gymnasium-auditorium, complete health education department excepting swimming pool, and a dining room with seating capacity of 80 persons.
From the asphalt tile flooring to the most minute table ornament, the building reflects excellent taste and is done in a decor that would make the most talented housewife envious.
FIRST FLOOR APPOINTMENTS
To the right of the spacious lobby are offices for staff personnel, quarters for the receptionist and a nook for the residence director. At the extreme right wing of the main floor is found the dining room, done in pretty green and appointed with gray and chrome tables and matching chairs. The formica top tables are guaranteed to withstand hard wear—for the dining room will be open daily, serving three meals.
Just off the dining room is the modernly equipped kitchen which offers bountiful storage space, work tables, built-in cabinets, restaurant size stoves, refrigerators and a commercial dishwasher. The kitchen walls and floor are sunburst tile and blend with the delicately colored cabinets.
The dining room will comfortably seat 80 persons, and for larger groups, the gymnasium auditorium can be arranged to seat 500 for food service.
ULTRA-MODERN GYMNASIUM
The ultra modern gymnasium, larger than regulation size, is equipped to take care of any game needs. It will offer space for archery, volley ball, basketball, and similar indoor games. A combination heating air conditioning system will make it excellent for year around use.
An ample stage with dressing rooms on either side, will aid dramatic productions and at the same time will prove convenient for groups using the building for public meetings.
The combination auditorium-gymnasium has a mass-meeting seating capacity of 900. Stage curtains are green and gold. Pull out drawers under the stage will serve as storage rooms for collapsible chairs, tables and game equipment.
Adjacent to the gym is the shower room with single stalls and the gang shower for younger kids. This shower room, also in sunburst tile is complete with lockers and mirrored powder bar. These facilities offer to the Atlanta public a complete health education unit with the exception of swimming pool.
SECOND FLOOR FEATURES
On the second floor are found the executive director's office, a lovely front view done in panama green, wall to wall carpeting and mahogany office furnishings. The hand finished mahogany desk is large enough to double as conference table for staff meetings. One other office is maintained on this floor for the director's secretary.
Also in the South wing is a huge and magnificently appointed lounge room with rose-beige wall coloring and complementing wall to wall floor covering. A grand piano holds a prominent position in this room and exquisite furniture in varied colors are conveniently grouped for easy conversation.
A club room, completely furnished by the MRS Club, has cocoa colored walls and is brightened with turquoise blue upholstered furniture. Adjoining this is a conference room and check room space.
All rooms are completed with attractive draperies and bric-a-brac to add a woman's touch.
RESIDENCE QUARTERS
Two dormitory rooms, a transient room and utility quarters are in the North wing of the second floor. All facilities for comfort and convenience have been considered, for in the utility room is found an automatic washer, automatic drier and ironing space.
Through these facilities and continuance of the old building on Boulevard, residence space for 59 girls will be offered, making a "home away from home" for those who need the Y's services.
