SWITZERLAND.
No nation in Europe enjoyed a government which bore a nearer resemblance to that of the United States, than Switzerland. This little republic once free and happy, fell a victim to French rapacity and intrigue. Its mountains, the haunt of the shepherd-its valleys, the asylum of innocence, through which the song of mirth was re-echoed with each revolving day, could not escape the darkness and desolation which enshrouded and disfigured the fairest portion of the earth. Peace dwelt where the brave fell bearded the despot in other days, and liberty adorned the brows of the cliffs of hardy Helvetia. Scene how delightful to the Philanthropist! how odious to Frenchmen! They marched into the favoured region. The Eagle of this revolutionary tyrant waved over the spot which the huntsman had trodden in manly security, and the groans of despair, mingled with the shrieks of violated beauty, were heard in those hamlets formerly animated by the simple though celebrated "Ranz de vache." Interesting land, native spot of the gentle and contemplative Zimmerman, thy solitude has been profaned, thy bosom has bled indeed! But the moment is arrived when thy chains are burst in sunder. -The God of retributive Justice rolls back on thy invaders the dreadful tide of waste and ruin; the olive branch is already seen from thy mountains, returning smiles already dimple thy valleys, and invite thee to build anew thy cottages on the ground, the blessed walk of thy fathers -to enliven them with thy songs, to consecrate them with thy prayers.
Americans gifted with equal laws and free government, yet especially, who are natives of mountain regions like Switzerland, rejoice at her emancipation, and remember the tyranny of Frenchmen.
HAMILTON.
