THE GEORGETOWN SCHOOL DISTRICT
Is Now In Exempted Class
And Will Be State Supervised.
Georgetown, Ohio. The Georgetown Special School District has been advanced in rank to that known as Exempted District. Ohio school districts are designated as Rural, Village, Exempt and City.
Notification that this advance has been made was received in letter from State Director of Education, O. B. Skinner, for the Board of Education, addressed to Arthur S. Fite, clerk of the board. In substance this letter set forth that enumeration of the district had verified that the population of the district was 3,384. To qualify as an exempted district the enumeration must reach 3,000.
This district includes the village of Georgetown, most of Pleasant township, and parts of all the townships adjoining it (which barring Union, include all the townships in the county). The other exempted special school district in this section of Ohio is Hillsboro.
This change means that the district will hereafter be under supervisor of the State Department of Education, instead of the County Board of Education. Voters in the district will not participate in the election of a County Board of Education. It will also mean that the 2.60 mill levy for school purposes will be appropriated for the district school needs. Also that instead of the salaries of teachers being governed by classification under county school board restriction, the state department will be final. It is estimated that the change means approximately $2,700 additional in funds for school operation in the district.
Another feature which is heard commented, is that in county school events the Georgetown schools can participate only by consent of the other special districts of the county. This feature has caused much comment because of the active part which pupils of local schools have taken. It is pointed out that such events held in Georgetown schools with Georgetown co-operation have always drawn considerable sized audiences and yielded generously in a financial way.
