Captain Potts, of the British ship Medway, left Madeira the 30th October, by him we learn that accounts had reached Madeira of the misunderstanding between Great-Britain and Spain, which it was believed would terminate in open hostilities. Advices had been received from Spain which state, that the French had taken possession of the Spanish ships of war in Ferrol, Corunna, &c. and that French officers and mariners had arrived from Rochefort and other ports of France to man the Spanish Ships. Apprehensions were entertained in Madeira (in consequence of advices from Lisbon) of a visit from the French; those advices, moreover, stated, that the court of Lisbon was alarmed by the discovery of a plan, which the French government had formed for taking possession of the island of Madeira and the Brazils.
