JUNEAU, (AP) Republican Elton E. Engstrom, defeated by only one vote in his bid to unseat State Sen. Thomas B. Stewart for Stewart's District D Senate seat, said yesterday he will ask for a recount.
After all regular ballots and absentee ballots had been counted in the district, Stewart led Engstrom 2,764 to 2,763.
Engstrom, who was defeated by Stewart by less than 200 votes in 1958, said he will file his request for a recount after the vote has been certified by the State Canvassing Board.
Engstrom must pay $50 a precinct for the recount. If the recount is 4 per cent or more in excess of the vote reported by the official state count for the candidate making the recount request the amount he paid is returned by the state.
District D is composed of 12 precincts in the 5th district and 12 precincts in the 6th district.
