VERDICT AGAINST UNCLE SAM

"Fourteen Diamond Rings" Case in Favor of Plaintiffs.

On motion of Solicitor General Richards on behalf of the Government, the Supreme Court yesterday ordered a decree entered in favor of Smith & Rushmore and against the Government in their suit to recover duties paid on merchandise imported from the Philippine Islands.

This action is based on the decision in the "fourteen diamond rings" case, decided in December, in which it was held that no tariff duties could be collected on merchandise from the Philippines unless specifically fixed by Congress.
