Consolidation in St. Louis.—The people of St. Louis are having a rare time over the consolidation of their city and county governments. This project is so intensely popular that not only the tax payers are to have the benefit of it, but even the politicians are struggling to turn it to account. The Democrats being out of office, are, of course, in favor of the scheme, as it will give them a chance to get in. They are, therefore, intense consolidationists, and they cannot think of permitting their opponents to share any of the honor; or, in fact, to have any thing to do with the reorganization of the government. On Monday night last they (the Democrats) held a meeting in the rotunda of the Court House. According to the report in the Republican, C. D. H. Armstrong was appointed Chairman, "a number of vice presidents and secretaries were chosen, and a committee appointed to draft resolutions expressive of the sense of the meeting. The committee reported a preamble and resolutions, the former setting forth the necessity for consolidation, and the latter recommending the selection by the chair of a committee of ten to confer with the delegation in the Legislature from this county, as the best way to carry out the views expressed. They were adopted unanimously. Speeches were made by T. C. Johnson, Thomas C. Reynolds, Judge Bowlin, and others, all favoring the idea embodied in the call for the meeting. The committee of ten referred to will be announced, we presume, by the chairman hereafter."
