The Last Day's Session as Interesting as the Rest.
THE BEST OF TEACHERS' MEETINGS
Ever Held in This Vicinity Is What All Present Pronounce the Sessions Held in the Y. M. C. A. Hall Last Week—Some of the Prominent Workers Who Were Present.
The last day of the Round Table meeting was fully as pleasant as the others. Quite a number of subjects were discussed in a very interesting manner. The subject of advanced geography called forth remarks that were very instructive, and the teachers present all expressed themselves as not only well pleased, but highly edified, and they will return to their school rooms prepared for better work than ever before. One teacher expressed doubtless the opinion of all when she said that this was the best teachers' meeting ever held in Wheeling. The discussions throughout being perfectly informal and free, the speakers expressed themselves in a manner to be understood by all. It is not often that so many prominent educators come together and spend the time so pleasantly and with so little friction.
Many questions were discussed on which there were divergent views, but the best of feeling prevailed. Dr. Simpson, of Marietta college, attended two sessions, and his opinions were listened to with the deepest attention, because all could see and know that his sayings were those of not only an educated man but of an educator of men.
State Commissioner Carson, of the Ohio schools, impressed every one with his earnestness in the educational work, and he surely showed that the people of the great state of Ohio made no mistake when they placed him at the head of the educational system of which they are so proud. Superintendents Mertz, Bord, Vanclove, Duncan and others are fully abreast of the times educationally, and show that they are workmen of whom no community need be ashamed.
Superintendent Jones, of Bellaire, shows by his knowledge of the subjects discussed that he is a deep student of the best educational methods. He is very radical in some of his views, but generally radically right. While all did not agree with him in everything, they thought he was one of the foremost educators of the vicinity.
Prof. R. A. Armstrong presided at the meeting with grace and dignity, and showed himself well up with all of the rest of those present when called on to express an opinion on the topics discussed. The state university surely has in him one who will always do it honor.
The next meeting of the Round Table will be held some time during the month of October at Steubenville, Ohio. Superintendent Mertz is president of the executive committee and Superintendents Williams, of Moundsville, and Sanor, of East Liverpool, are the other members. This insures for the next meeting a great success, as this one was thought to be by all who attended.
