SHERIFF ELIOTT RECALLED
By Associated Press.

PORTLAND, Or., Oct. 22—Marion (Mike) Elliott, who parlayed a fancy set of campaign statements into a job as sheriff of Oregon's most populous county, was recalled last night.

Elliott, 28 year-old sometime Democrat, conceded defeat. Counting in the 512 precincts in Portland and the rest of Multnomah County gave a tally in the special election of 59,059 for recall to 44,810 against.

Elliott had been under attack since the truth became known about his campaign statements last year. He switched registration to Democrat at the last minute, then told voters he was a 32-year-old veteran who had played football for the University of Michigan.

Later he admitted he was actually 28, had never been in college, and was discharged from the Marine Corps before the war began. He spent the war as an obscure ship yard guard here.

Elliott will be removed from office after an official canvass of the votes.

The Multnomah County Commissioners, who will serve until the election in November, 1950. Identity of the temporary successor has not been revealed by the commissioners, but they have committed themselves to appoint a Democrat.

The campaign against Elliott was touched off by the Morning Oregonian and the Oregon Journal shortly after Elliott defeated Martin Pratt by an upset margin of 800 votes.
