Extract of a letter from Gen. Moreau, to Gen. Fourcroy.

Head Quarters, at Wiesbaden (near Mayence) 13th Thermidor.

On the 9th, upon the left bank, a skirmish took place, in which the enemy lost many men; the whole of the 10th was passed in fortifying our position. The 11th, at two in the morning, the enemy made a sortie from Mayence to the number of seven or eight thousand men, under cover of a thick fog, which did not permit us to distinguish objects at ten steps distance. They forced our first posts; one of its columns marched to the woods of Erbach and Vintheim, where it began to gain ground. Gen. Hardy, in proportion as the fog cleared away, perceiving that the forces which the enemy had on the causeway of Mayence and upon the heights of Klein Vintheim, inclined towards their right, and were united to the column which attacked our left, did not hesitate to cause a change in front to be made on the left, in order, by becoming master of the causeway which leads to Mayence and Rembon, to cut off the retreat of the enemy by this causeway and to take them on the rear. This movement, which was well conceived and rapidly executed, produced a great effect and decided the retreat of the enemy which they effected under cover of a cross fire from their batteries. Adjutant General Bonami pursued their rear guard as far as Kuntzenheim; their loss was considerable in this affair, which has proved one of the warmest of the campaign, without proving the most interesting; they left thirty dead on the field, and carried off forty wagon loads of wounded which have passed by Frankfort, besides many others. The enemy cannot make another sortie from Mayence, or if they should think of it, we should oblige them to return with the greatest speed.

(Signed)
MOREAU.
