HELPING RECOVERY-
The Toledo News-Bee, one of the large newspapers of the country and particularly of the Scripps-Howard organization, has been forced to close its business in Toledo. Although one of the "liberal" papers of the "liberal" Scripps-Howard organization, the News-Bee could not cope with the situation of a demoralized industrial community brought on by the policies of the administration.
Two years ago the General Motors corporation found it necessary to close its transmission plant in Toledo where 40,000 men were given employment.
Constant agitation and disturbance in the labor department by racketeers who were insistent upon collecting dues finally forced the company to make good its threats of closing the plant. Forty thousand workmen were thrown off the payroll, the equipment was split up and shipped to a new plant in Muncie, Ind., and back to Detroit and the buildings themselves are now being used for storage purposes by the Chevrolet Motor company in Toledo. Possibly 200 or 300 men are now given employment where 40,000 were working before.
It was hard to know a few years ago that the way to make a fortune was either as a labor racketeer, an orchestra director or dance hall owner. The activities of the labor racketeer of course, are by far the most profitable as he has nothing invested aside from a lot of inflammatory gab and is not responsible for anything he says or does.
Recovery is returning rapidly to Toledo! One plant employing 40,000 people has been closed and now one of its two newspapers employing several hundred people is likewise on the closed list and its workers are spreading over the country looking for something to do.-Austin Herald.
