The prospects of agriculture are very good -- much better than was at one time anticipated.
SAN FRANCISCO, May 31st. Three weeks ago a large portion of the city lay in ruins. Ten thousand people had been burned out of their houses or places of business. Fifteen hundred or two thousand buildings were in ashes. Five thousand people were in the streets homeless, houseless. Since then there has been nothing but activity and life. Such a trade of plane and saw, clattering hammer and ringing trowel, rattling timber and rumbling drays has not been heard since the continent. Some of our streets have already their lines of houses complete, and many a corner can scarcely believe, as you told him how that less than three weeks ago half of a square mile of the city was nothing but blackened desolation.
Sales of real estate would indicate an improved state of feeling in regard to value. In certain portions of the city, especially those approaching the bay, lots are held even higher than they were two months since.
