Full Text

Brest, May 8. We imagine that Admiral Keppel's Fleet will disappear from before Belleisle the first North West Wind. That Commander well knowing that the Addition of 400 Mouths must make a considerable Hole in the Provisions of the Citadel of Palais, will not permit the English Troops that have been taken Prisoners to be removed to Vannes or elsewhere, though strongly solicited thereto by M. de Saint Croix, neither will he allow of Surgeons being sent into the Island to dress the wounded English, so suspicious he is of the Artifices of our Nation. [And not without a Reason.]

We are still Masters of the Islands of Hedie and Hunar, the last of which is within four Leagues of Belleisle, and was fruitlessly attempted to be blockaded by the English Fleet in 1697. There are but 50 Men in the fortified Places of those two Islands, but they are from their Situation inaccessible.

Event Details

Admiral Keppel's fleet blockading Belleisle anticipated to leave with first northwest wind, aware that feeding 400 prisoners depletes Citadel of Palais provisions. Despite requests by M. de Saint Croix, refuses to move prisoners to Vannes or send surgeons to wounded English, distrusting French intentions. French hold islands Hedie and Hunar near Belleisle, unsuccessfully blockaded by English in 1697, with 50 men in fortifications that are inaccessible.
