The Criss Cross Row, 1767.
SINCE every day great examples affords That authors, and others, can trifle with words, I'll do like the rest, I'll be aping my betters, I'll take up my horn book, and play with my letters.
Great A stands for Ale and Administration.
And B stands for Bubbles and Bites in high station (O Britain, thrice happy ! from such things exempt, Thy state so remotely remov'd from contempt !)
C stands for Corruption, for Court, and for C[ommons]
And D stands for Dunces, (K[ings] sometimes create 'em)
E for Evil oft lands. which no one dares touch, Because some have no power, and others too much ;
F stands for Finances, in general use.
And G stands for Government, Gambling, and Goose;
H sure stands for Honour. but O! grief of grief !. The robe of true honour oft hangs on a thief ;
And I stands for Interest, which great men pursue, So bent on the chase that they've nought else in view
And K stands for Kid. and for King and for Kite.
L stands for some Lawyer me--beware of a bite ;
M stands for Memento and Monarch I ween,
And N stands for--Nothing excelling the--[Queen] ;
When an O and a P stands for office and pension;
Look on Q as a Query for just reprehension ;
And R stands for Ribband, and Riches, and Rogue,
And S stands for Sinecures, greatly in vogue ;
T stands for Turncoat-- Old England beware !
V stands for Vulture--redouble your care !
And W stands for Wisdom and Whigs,
Who've propt up Great Britain by tricks and intrigues
X typifies Xerxes wild lashing the sea ;
Be like it, ye Britons ! no tyrant obey !
And Y stand for Youth (we see that on the T[imes])
And Z stands for Zeal for our Monarch alone,
