Full Text

Extract of a letter from Dominica, April 10.

"A melancholy accident happened here last night: Our President, M. Pringle, with some more Gentlemen of the island, went onboard the Phenix man of war to take their leave of Capt. Holwell; and in returning from the ship to the shore the boat they were in filled with water, and it became necessary for every man to shift for himself. The President, and Mr. Robertson our Secretary, could not swim, and therefore were drowned; the rest of the Gentlemen were picked up by people in a little boat, who happened accidentally to hear their cries. Some of those who could not swim kept fast to the boat that was sunk, and by that means kept themselves above water and were saved. Had the President done the same, he might in all probability have been saved; but finding the boat, as he thought, going to the bottom, he was so frightened that he sprung out of her. His death is an irreparable loss to this island."
