In my communication of yesterday, signed 'Paul Jones,' and especially designed to call attention to the condition of our new Fifth street bridge, the following language occurs: "We think as well that the officers wink at offenses that are vile and pestilential, or get in the way of perquisites, costs and such money, while the evil continues and your execrable is only a placid action at your citizens." As this was based upon hearsay, and written hastily and inconsiderately, and does manifest injustice to the officers of our city, and particularly to the recorder and city marshal, against either one of whom have I ever heard any charge of individual or official corruption, and as the language used, though not intended, so reflected upon them, I ask space for this in justice to myself no less than to the officers of our city and to further say that said language is not warranted by any facts in my knowledge.

At the request of Captain Herrin, the [newspaper] yesterday gave space to a letter urging the necessity of completing the Fifth street bridge. Knowing the position of the writer the communication was inserted without the usual inspection of the manager. We to-day, as a matter of justice to all parties, give the above card.
