The debate between Messrs. Stuart and Michie Whig and Democratic Electors for this Congressional District, came off on Monday, according to appointment. Mr. Stuart opened in a speech of an hour and a half, occupying most of the time in showing up in its hideous deformity, the profligacy and extravagance of the present Democratic Administration for which the Democratic party is responsible, and which stands endorsed by the Petersburg Convention which nominated Mr. Letcher. The authorities produced by Mr. Stuart were Democratic, which of course Mr. Michie could not gainsay or resist. Mr. Stuart's opening speech was one of the best we have ever heard from him, and his rejoinder full of happy repartee and genuine eloquence.
Mr. Michie, if we may venture to express the opinion in these days when the statements of partizan editors are really entitled to but little weight, did not answer Mr. Stuart's speech. Much of his time was taken up with the Know Nothings. Mr. Stuart happily illustrated the attack upon "Sam" by Falstaff's assault upon the body of the dead Percy. We regret that we have not time to notice the discussion at greater length, and regret still more that every voter in the County of Augusta did not hear it in full.
