The last mode of getting an Introduction.
We met yesterday the first time for some years, a friend who was always noted for his bashfulness. Of course, we were somewhat astonished to hear he had just been getting married.
'How did you get acquainted?' we inquired.
'Oh,' said he, 'a sprained ankle introduced me. But to be more particular. In passing along Seventh street every day which was the route I took to my place of business, my attention was naturally attracted to a beautiful young lady living in -- square who usually occupied the front window as I passed and repassed; and I fell in love at first sight, and my desire for an introduction grew stronger and stronger until I found myself nearly desperate. No possible respectable way of making her acquaintance could be suggested. One afternoon as I was passing, several water-melon-rinds lying on the pavement in front of her door seemed all at once eminently suggestive. I acted on the impulse of the thought and stepping upon the small remnant of a cast-away melon, I slipped, fell, and, of course, sprained my ankle! It was a terrible dislocation and I fainted away on the strength of it. I need not tell you that I was taken into the very house which contained my love at first sight. I calculated from sound premises and my ankle kept sprained until I was pretty well acquainted! You know the rest!'
