Prestigitator, has been here; Richmond
and Petersburg have been captured; yet
it would be impossible to tell, from the
general topic of conversation yesterday
morning, which was the greatest event,
we think Houdin's slightly ahead. His
performances gave unbounded satisfaction,
and one very good evidence of his
success was that, although he had a good
house in the afternoon, at night it was
literally jammed. His performance was
generally of a superior class of trick to
what one generally sees in this kind of
exhibitions, yet some few of his feats
border strangely close onto the miraculous;
for instance, the feat styled the
Sleeping Arab, in which one of the performers
is seated upon a chair, which
is placed upon a table on the stage, and
put to sleep with his elbow resting upon
a slim staff, at least six feet in length,
which stood upon the platform. After
the Arab is asleep, his body is raised up
to a horizontal position, with no support
but his elbow, which is resting upon the
perpendicular staff; the chair and table
are removed, and Houdin then passes
his cape, with a swift motion, under, over
and all around the sleeper, to convince
the audience that the sleeper has no support,
except his elbow on the staff, with
his head resting upon his hand and the
other hand lying extended on his side.
The position of the sleeper seems easy
and graceful; and this sight alone, all
say, was worth ten times the admission
price. Caroline Houdin astonished
every one with her marvelous exhibition
in the mysteries of Second Sight, and
the whole exhibition excited feelings of
pleasure and astonishment in the audience.
We are informed by Mr. Robbins,
travelling agent for Houdin, that "Haskell's
Show" will exhibit here again on
the 1st Monday in May.
