Full Text
On Friday last the Indians sloop of war and brig Plumper, went past this place for St. Andrews, to convoy 20 sail of English merchantmen out of the Bay of Fundy. They had taken the privateer Argus, Heath, of Boston, and schr. —, Morgan, of Marblehead. The Plumper reports that she had taken 11 sail of American vessels, and let them all pass except two after taking out what they pleased—Off St. Andrews they took the privateer schr. —, Capt. Riche, an Englishman from Charlestown, Mass. who has taken steady lodgings on board the Indians. Another privateer was chased on shore at Point Lepreau, 20 miles from this place. The men gave leg bail, by taking to the woods. A privateer went to Grand-Manam, [an English Island] last Friday, boarded a vessel that had been hauled up and stripped of sails—not finding the sails, they ransacked the houses and wharves, and threatened the unarmed inhabitants with death, unless they discovered them—after much trouble they found part of the sails and made off with the vessel, worth, perhaps, in the States, $50,000 !! If our government allows of land privateering, they ought to send us a sufficient force to ward off the blow, should the English retaliate.
