Notwithstanding the misrepresentations of the anti-republican presses in that section of the State, the patriotic exhibition of feeling displayed in the reported proceedings of this assembly—in their speeches and toasts, manifest a high degree of ability, patriotism, liberality and good feeling. About 200 appear to have been seated at the table, at which the Hon. JONATHAN NYE, of Claremont, presided, assisted by eight Vice Presidents. A complimentary toast from the committee of arrangements to their distinguished guest, drew from him an eloquent and able response, occupying eight or ten columns in the Claremont papers, The assemblage was also addressed by Messrs Nye, Gilchrist and others.
A large number of letters from distinguished gentlemen of the democratic party, both in and out of the State, who were unable to comply with an invitation to attend, with accompanying toasts, breathing an admirable unanimity of political sentiment, were read at the table, and received with sensations of flattering applause.
