Stage And Screen Star Will Take Lead Role In Movie "Porgy And Bess"

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. - Negro stage and screen star Sidney Poitier has agreed, for the second time, to play the lead role in Samuel Goldwyn's cinemaversion of "Porgy and Bess.

Poitier turned down a contract for the part last month because "quite possibly the story would be injurious to Negroes." His acceptance was based on his confidence that Mr. Goldwyn, with his characteristic good taste and integrity. will present the property in a sensitive manner," Poitier said.
